On-prem vs. Cloud: How to choose the ideal IT infrastructure for your business
Each option has its pros and cons. The right choice depends on your organisation’s specific needs, budget and strategic goals. At Geetoo Technology, we don’t automatically push customers to the cloud. Our goal is to find the solution that best fits the organization’s requirements, whether it’s on-premises hardware, cloud, or a hybrid approach.
On-prem: maximum control and customisation
An on-premises solution means that all IT infrastructure — servers, storage and software — is physically located and managed in-house. This model is ideal for organizations that:
- They need absolute control over their data and systems, especially due to strict regulatory requirements (for example in banking or healthcare).
- They require specific hardware and software customisation that the cloud may not offer.
- They want to minimize dependence on external providers.
Benefits:
- Full control over your own infrastructure and data.
- A level of security tailored to internal standards, including the ability to run the environment fully offline.
- One-off capital investments may be more profitable for some companies in the long term.
- Possibility of higher customization of the environment configuration to the specific needs of the customer.
- An isolated environment by its very nature, with no shared resources and no risks associated with multitenant operation.
Disadvantages:
- High initial costs for hardware and software.
- The need for qualified IT staff for administration and maintenance.
- Dedicated space in a location adapted for the operation of a local datacenter.
- Limited scalability when needs change rapidly.
- Increased risk of cyber threats: due to the increasing number and sophistication of cyber attacks, pure on-premises environments can be risky. Without a robust backup solution, ideally using the cloud for off-site backups, there is a risk of data loss during unexpected events and attacks.
- Risk of failure if hardware is located in one location without appropriate measures such as redundant connectivity to the Internet or backup power.
- The eventual need to replace the hardware with current hardware and the associated additional eventual costs.
Recommendation: even when choosing on-premises infrastructure, we recommend implementing cloud backup. This approach provides greater resilience against cyber threats such as ransomware attacks and enables rapid data recovery in the event of a disaster.
Cloud: flexibility and cost efficiency
Cloud services allow companies to move their IT infrastructure to the provider’s data centres, bringing flexibility and scalability. This model is ideal for companies that:
- They grow quickly or need to respond flexibly to market changes.
- They want to minimize capital expenditures and move to operating expenses (OPEX) with a clear TCO (total cost of ownership).
- They don’t know how many resources they will need and they want flexibility as IT resource consumption grows.
- They are looking for easy administration and automatic updates.
Benefits:
- Rapidly scale resources to meet current needs, ideal for unpredictable growth or seasonal fluctuations.
- Reducing the cost of physical infrastructure, its maintenance and updating.
- High availability and support from the cloud provider. In short, peace of mind.
- Redundancy of resources ensured by the provider itself in case of HW failure — the customer does not have to think about where his workload is running and the provider solves the problem for him in a matter of minutes.
Disadvantages:
- Dependence on the reliability and security of the provider.
- Possible long-term costs of intensive use.
- Need to ensure compatibility with regulatory requirements.
- Limited visibility of the underlying infrastructure (the customer may not have information about the underlying HW and the location where their workloads are running).
Hybrid model: balance between control and flexibility
The hybrid approach combines the benefits of on-premises and cloud, allowing businesses to enjoy the best of both worlds. Sensitive data and mission-critical applications can remain in the on-premises environment, while less demanding services run in the cloud. This model is suitable for companies that:
- They want to maintain control over key systems, but at the same time take advantage of cloud flexibility.
- They are planning a gradual migration to the cloud without immediately abandoning their existing infrastructure.
- They need a robust backup and recovery solution.
Benefits:
- Flexibility to manage different types of workloads.
- Cost optimisation through a combination of models.
- Greater resilience to outages through a combination of environments.
Disadvantages:
- More complex management and integration of both environments.
- Need for careful planning to ensure compatibility.
How Geetoo Technology helps Czech companies
At Geetoo Technology, we believe there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The technology journey with our customers starts with a thorough needs analysis. The goal is to create an infrastructure that is mature, secure and cost effective. This is how we have operated for over 20 years. We tailor solutions for our customers and pride ourselves on superior business relationships.
Our key services include:
- Geetoo Cloud Compute: A scalable cloud platform with high availability and security, ideal for dynamic businesses. Ability to connect with existing on-premises infrastructure to create a hybrid cloud in multiple ways (VPN, Network-to-Network Interface).
- Geetoo Private Cloud: Dedicated environment for organizations with strict control and security requirements. As with Cloud Compute, the ability to connect the private environment in our DC to a customer’s existing infrastructure.
- Geetoo Scale: A unique solution that combines hardware rental with the flexibility of the cloud, where the customer only pays for what they actually use. On average, customers save 30% on IT costs.
- Geetoo Disaster Recovery: A backup solution to ensure business continuity even in crisis situations, including cloud backup for increased resilience.
Proof of our quality is, for example, our cooperation with the Czech company Alcom Alval. After the unexpected loss of a key IT administrator, we helped them quickly migrate part of their infrastructure to the cloud and implement a robust backup solution, which ensured uninterrupted operations and minimized risks.
Key factors in decision making
When choosing between on-premises, cloud or hybrid models, consider the following questions:
- What are your budget options? On-prem requires a higher initial investment, while cloud offers predictable operating costs.
- What are your safety and regulatory requirements? Some sectors may require local data storage.
- How fast do you need to scale? The cloud is ideal for businesses with unpredictable growth or seasonal fluctuations.
- What is your current infrastructure? The hybrid model can ease the transition without the need for a complete rebuild.
- How resilient is your infrastructure to cyber threats? Backing up to the cloud can significantly increase security and ensure fast recovery.
- What level of expertise does your IT team have (primary point is whether the customer is able to handle the hybrid/on-prem themselves or would prefer a service managed by a provider)
- Customer’s time disposition — does he need to deploy ASAP or is it OK for him to wait some time for HW delivery?
